Smoke Alarms

Your First Line of Defense

  • Install on every level, in each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas
  • Test alarms monthly using the test button
  • Replace batteries annually; replace the unit every 10 years
  • Interconnected alarms ensure all alarms sound when one detects smoke
💨

Carbon Monoxide Safety

The Silent Killer

  • Install CO detectors on every level of your home
  • Never run vehicles, generators, or grills inside enclosed spaces
  • Know the symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea — leave immediately
  • Call 911 if your alarm sounds and anyone feels symptoms
🚪

Home Escape Planning

Know Your Way Out

  • Draw a floor plan with two exits from every room
  • Designate a meeting place outside — never go back in
  • Practice your escape plan with all household members twice per year
  • Keep exit paths and doors clear of clutter at all times
🍳

Kitchen Safety

Where Most Home Fires Start

  • Never leave cooking unattended — especially on the stovetop
  • Keep flammables away from heat sources
  • Have a fire extinguisher accessible and know how to use it
  • Smother small grease fires with a lid — never use water

Generator Safety

Prevent CO Poisoning

  • Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows
  • Place generators at least 20 feet from doors and vents
  • Install battery-operated CO detectors when using a generator
  • Turn off generators before refueling and let them cool first
🔌

Electrical Safety

Reduce Fire Risk at Home

  • Don't overload outlets or use damaged extension cords
  • Keep heat-producing appliances away from flammable materials
  • Have your home's wiring inspected if it's over 40 years old
  • Never run cords under rugs or through doorways

Lake Anna Water Safety

Stay Safe on the Water

  • Always wear a properly fitted life jacket on boats and near open water
  • Swim in designated areas and never swim alone
  • Check weather conditions before boating — storms move fast on the lake
  • Know the location of nearest public boat ramps in case of emergency
🌲

Wildfire Prevention

Protect Your Property

  • Create a defensible space by clearing brush 30+ feet from your home
  • Use fire-resistant landscaping and building materials
  • Clean gutters and roofs of dead leaves and debris regularly
  • Have an evacuation plan and sign up for Louisa County emergency alerts
👶

Child Safety

Teaching Kids Fire Safety

  • Teach children to Stop, Drop, and Roll if clothing catches fire
  • Practice home fire drills so children know what to do
  • Keep lighters and matches locked up and out of reach
  • Teach children to never hide from firefighters in an emergency
👴
